PESHAWAR: For people who openly sell night-vision goggles, grenades and even the occasional RPG, the dealers at the American Market in Peshawar are remarkably reluctant to talk about their clientele.
Eventually, a laptop dealer, selling Dells and HPs at knockdown prices, explains who the dealers here sell their weapons to.
Most of the arms here will end up with the Taliban. Some people come to buy these weapons for themselves but mostly they are bought by militants, he says.
He explains that the area has come to be known as the American Market because it sells US goods that have either been stolen and transported from Afghanistan or captured from Nato trucks being transported from Pakistan to Afghanistan.
While everything from scanned goods to electronic equipment is available at the American Market, the majority of the items on sale are weapons. The laptop dealer says the American Market is only the third largest of its kind in Pakistan, and similar markets in Bara, Jamrud and Dara Adam Khel offer a greater variety of weapons, although he adds that there has been an army clampdown in Dara Adam Khel.
Despite the abundance of arms available in these markets, this is only the tip of the iceberg for the Taliban.
The Taliban are the United Nations of weaponry, says Lee Wollonsky, an arms-smuggling expert who has worked with various think-tanks in the US.
They have arms from the US, China, Russia, Iran and just about every other country you can think of. How the Taliban became an essential chain in the global arms trade, is a fascinating story. Wollonsky says that the Taliban linked into arms smuggling networks that originated from Russia.
You have dealers in Russia with their own private chartered airlines that they use to smuggle arms around the world. The Taliban get arms from charter airlines that are registered in the UAE, where there is very little oversight. According to Wollonsky, there airlines shuttle poisonous chemicals, arms, ammunition and sometimes even operatives to Taliban operatives in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The planes that are used are usually the discarded ones from the days of the Soviet Union.
Another source of Taliban arms in Pakistan, says Shanaka Jayasekara, is the LTTE in Sri Lanka. Jayasekara has done academic research into the Tamil separatist group and believes that the LTTE had front groups in Sharjah that smuggled weapons into Karachi, from where they would be distributed to the Taliban.
The US, meanwhile, believes that the Taliban may be getting weaponry from Iran.
Militant safe houses raided in the tribal areas have revealed the presence of Iranian-made AK-47s but it is not known if these have been smuggled out of Iran or provided by the government of Iran.
Taliban videos posted on jihadi-websites, meanwhile, show them carrying Chinese anti-aircraft missiles which, most arms-control experts believe, have come through the international smuggling network and not from the Chinese government.
Ultimately, though, the greatest provider though inadvertently of weaponry to the Taliban based in Afghanistan may be its greatest target: the US. As the laptop dealer at the American Market in Peshawar says, The US gives weapons to people in Afghanistan to fight the Taliban and they just go and sell it to people here who then sell it to the Taliban.

And here our members (and general public) were assuming how the ones who attacked PNS Mehran were US commandoes because of their weapons and equipment, when all of this stuff can be easily available for many years on the black markets like this (esp. given the looting of NATO convoys that pass through Chaman and Khyber Pass)!!!!

And please don't ignore the fact that even the US army is also involved in selling their own equipment as well.......

It's an old story to misguide people, anti state elements are using same weapons and it's a very coward and clever attempt to link that Taliban got it from here and US/INDIA/MOSAD didn't train terrorists/provide them weapons, it's very interesting to note the timing of this article and mentioning of PNS mehran.

Pentagon Conceals Pakistan Thefts of Military Supplies

Are we now equipping the Taliban too?

Markets in western Pakistan are reportedly awash in U.S. military equipment and supplies stolen from containers being transshipped from the Port of Karachi overland into Afghanistan. The goods for sale reportedly include trucks, armored vehicles, Humvees, night vision goggles, body armor, food, military computers, communications gear, large electricity generators and even personal effects of the troops. The thefts also include Army Combat Uniforms (ACUs) and more importantly IR (infrared) tabs that U.S. troops wear at night to distinguish themselves from the enemy. Some of the stolen items are U.S. Munitions List regulated items, which makes them among the most classified items in the Pentagon’s inventory.
There have been repeated reports of U.S. and NATO weapons being stolen by or sold to the Taliban, both in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In early September, reports emerged that dozens of British 59 “minimi” machine guns were stolen during a road heist in Kandahar. The Model 59 can fire 1,000 rounds per minute. The British Daily Telegraph reported on September 4, 2010, that at least some of the stolen guns had been used against American forces.
Minimi_1708498c-ae34f.jpg

The 59 Minimi machine guns were not reported missing for almost a year.
The Pakistani news blog “thecurrentaffairs.com” reported last year that the Taliban in Pakistan are being supplied with modern American mortars, rockets and sniper rifles. On August 2, 2010, the respected Pakistani newspaper Dawn published a story regarding how stolen U.S. military weapons are being used against the Pakistani army in the Swat Valley. The stolen material therefore may not simply be upgrading the combat capabilities of the Taliban in Afghanistan, but may also be destabilizing Pakistan.
The October 11, 2010, edition of Dawn reported that more than 500 trucks hauling American and NATO supplies through Pakistan are currently unaccounted for. That appears to just be some of the thefts for 2010. These stolen military supplies could be finding their way to the Taliban and could be providing it with a key edge in the war as it enters its 10th year. The Pentagon does not publicize or even publicly acknowledge these thefts, except in the most general of terms. This author has not been able to determine the full scope of the problem, but the volume appears to be staggering. Congress and the American people deserve to be told the truth. They should be provided with detailed information about the volume, dollar amount and description of the lost supplies. They should also be briefed as to why the thefts are continuing and what the Pentagon and the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan are doing about this scandal.
On May 24, 2010, Deputy Pentagon Inspector General Ginger Cruz told Defense News that the U.S. Justice Department has tended to ignore overseas thefts and contract fraud cases. As a result, it has been difficult to prosecute American and foreign contractors and companies that steal from the U.S. overseas.
In contrast, on October 7, 2010, David B. Fein, the United States Attorney for Connecticut, announced with great fanfare the sentencing of Wilfred Bouton to two years in jail for stealing and selling military rifle scopes and range finders. Mr. Fein announced to the press that:
“Illegal weapons trafficking is a serious offense that endangers the lives of our military servicemen and servicewomen overseas.”
While this statement is correct, the U.S. Justice Department’s commitment to combating such weapons trafficking is questionable. Mr. Bouton’s alleged offense is trivial compared to what occurs every day in Pakistan, yet there is no apparent concern by Attorney General Eric Holder regarding the seemingly organized campaign of thefts of U.S. military goods in Pakistan. The Obama Administration’s rationale seems to be that a percentage of thefts in Pakistan are inevitable and that they are simply a cost of doing business. It may also be reluctant to press for indictments as many of the Pakistani trucking companies have ties to the Pakistani military. This is the same policy that the CIA acquiesced to during the 1980’s when it reportedly permitted the Pakistani military to skim off a percentage of the weapons and military gear that the Reagan Administration was providing to Muslim extremist groups that were fighting the Soviet Union in Afghanistan.

High-tech American Arms are for sale in flea markets along the Afghan/Pakistan border.
The WikiLeaks documents reveal that the Bush Administration covered up and misled the American people regarding military failures, potential American war crimes and unnecessary civilian casualties, both in Iraq and Afghanistan. The evidence suggests that nothing has changed under President Obama. How many American troops have died as a result of the Taliban’s acquisition of stolen U.S. military equipment and weapons?
The Pentagon, CIA and State Department continue to selectively publish good news about “progress” in Afghanistan and continue to control (and sometimes suppress) bad news about the war. How can one trust State Department and Pentagon boasts of progress when there is no transparency? Just as important is the fact that the Taliban will never be defeated as long as the Pentagon continues to provide it with a seemingly endless supply of modern American military equipment.

Looted U.S. Army gear for sale in Pakistan

Border town business booms, especially as dispute stalls NATO supply trucks

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — In a rundown market here along the road to Afghanistan, you can buy U.S. Army gear stamped with soldiers' names, booklets marked "for official use only," even a manual that illustrates how "jammers" can stop remote-controlled bombs.

The traders are coy about where their stock comes from, but it's clear much of it is stolen from trucks carrying military supplies over the border. Recent raids on warehouses where the looted goods are stockpiled have even turned up photos mailed to U.S. soldiers from loved ones back home.

Not only is there merchandise here that could aid insurgents, it also illustrates the challenges of securing supply lines into landlocked Afghanistan, a task underscored in recent days by the closure of the main route through Pakistan and subsequent fiery attacks on convoys.

Interesting article, Yani ab Peshawar jana hi parega ;)...

Now back to the topic, Guys I will recommend you to watch Nicolase cage's "Lord of War" (2003). You will get the whole idea that what is this business all about...
As far as Mehran base Attack is concerned, its absolutely rubbish that they were carrying some extra ordinary modernized weapon.. They were carrying AK-47 & one of them was with g-3, RPGs, grenades and night vision googles...
Question arises about NvGs... but believe me its easier than cracking nuts... there are many arms-related website and any one can order these Nvgs online with the help of credit card, they are gonna charge u nearly 400-500 dollars
