I'm going to assume the two families are Muslims. In Islam, the dowry is given to the woman from the man. To show he can provide for a family. This jahaiz that we have today is utter nonsense from an Islamic perspective.
About time we concentrate on religion and give up cultural practices that clash with Islam. It will make life so much easier for everyone.

Easier said than done. People who condemns dowry the most are usually the same people who demand or give dowry the most. Just my opinion. These type of bad practices are on the rise instead of declining.

you are talking about haq-mehr...I think most people give the minimum...and if they do promise to give a lot, they don't give it even when you are talking divorce...and on top of that, not much can be expected from our legal system to make the men pay it either...

بلکہ ، مرد کے قیمت جو عورت ادا کر کے کنجوس ، نا عاقبت اندیش اور خبیث صفت افراد سے ان کا بیٹا خرید لیتے ہے


مگر ہر کاروباری کے طرح اپنی اولاد کی مناسب قیمت نا لگنے پر بیچاری خریدار کو ظلم کا نشانہ بنایا جاتا ہے.


اور ظلم کرنے والے بھول جاتے ہیں کہ وہ جہیز نہیں اپنی اولاد بیچ رہے ہیں.


سوداگر ہیں ، مناسب دام چاہتے ہیں ، بازاری قیمت وصول کرنا چاہتے ہیں. ​

Look at it this way, if your daughter was getting married and you know that she is going to leave you and would not ask you for anything once she is married, wouldn't you want to give everything you possibly can to your daughter. I would give my daughter whatever I can afford. What I don't like is when groom's family demands for dowry and gifts for groom's family etc, even when they know that the bride's family cannot afford it.

Look at it this way, if your daughter was getting married and you know that she is going to leave you and would not ask you for anything once she is married, wouldn't you want to give everything you possibly can to your daughter. even if bride's family can afford it, the groom's family has no right to a demand...but if you want to give your daughter anything you want to that is ok...but this whole concept of "dowry" is plain sick...is ki base ko hi deemak lag chuki hai..
