First of all how is sacrificing your life in battle is showing off or shirk? And how is showing off shirk? At worse it can be called takkabur, certainly a displeasing trait but certainly not worthy of eternal damnation either.

That's the problem with a lot of hadith they contradict and go against the Quran and general spirit of Islam. And by default, even hardcore hadith centric people should take any hadith by Abu Huraira with a massive grain of salt.

Dear Citizen X, its not takkabur at all. Takkabur is something else. It is the sense of grandeur and the sense of being more important or more prominent than others. For example, you have a mercedes and you think that you are better than your neighbor because you have an amazing intellect. You used your brain and got skills that earned you a mercedes. This is takkabur because the reality of human is that HE IS BORN OF A VERY DISGUSTING DROP OF WATER AND IS GOES THROUGH THE PRIVATE PART OF HIS FATHER ONCE AND GOES THROUGH THE PRIVATE PART OF HIS MOTHER TWICE!!!

On the other hand, if your neyat or your intention in the battle was to show your strength and grandeur. How strong you were and how bravely you have fought. YOU WERE NOT DOING BATTLE OR GIVING CHARITY FOR PLEASING ALLAH INSTEAD YOU WERE WORSHIPPING YOUR EGO. THIS IS SHIRK!

azeezam knowledge sb, when we know from the quran that God does not do anything bad to anyone then it is important to interpret such parts of the verses in that context. What God is saying here in 14/4 is that he lets people live as they wish. It in no way means one wants to be good but God turns him bad. This is why I reject mullaan translations because they are out of context. They put God in bad light. Humans are given freedom to live as they wish but guidance of God is there for them to help them guide themselves by it if they so choose. God does not forcefully guide people or for that matter misguide them.

regards and all the best.
dear mughal sahib,

You got it all wrong. I never accept any mullan translations. By the grace of Allah, I understand Arabic a bit so I can read Quran without any translations. And let me tell you Moudadi did a pretty amazing job translating it exactly as it should be.

Now, the meaning of the verses is that Hidayah will not be served on a plate to you. You have to strive for it as you strive for worldly riches. If you know what I mean. You spend half of your life studying out of date books so that you can get a decent job. You strive and run day and night to achieve the dream of buying a house and a Mercedes and a beautiful wife so that you can brag amongst your relatives that you are a better and elevated human being than they can ever be!

YOU HAVE TO STRIVE IN THE PATH OF ALLAH. ALLAH WILL NOT SERVE YOU HIDAYAH ON PLATE. YOU OR ANYONE IS NOT ENTITLED OF ANYTHING. WHATEVER IS GIVEN IS CHARITY OF THE MIGHIEST AND MOST EXALTED.

IF ALLAH WILLS, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO GET HIDAYAH BY STRIVING FOR IT.

Who told the hadith writers about it? Only Allah knows who will enter paradise or hell.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN DEAR? please dont give me that hadiths are an example of chinese whispers. Chinese whispers are something else.

as for the hadith, there is about 6 to 8 volumes of books complied by some of the most hard working people of their time. It is called ASMA UR RIJJAL.. THe names of people. This book can answer any or all of your questions regarding the authenticity of hadiths and the Sayings of Prophet Sallahu alayhe wassalam.

All of you are going around circles and none of the obtuse explanations put forward resolve the hadith and the objections regarding this hadith put forward.

Do you know what the rejection rate of hadith is by the compliers of hadith themselves? Are you aware the so called "most authentic book after the Quran" i.e sahih bhukari fails the standard of sahih as set by the muhadithseen themselves, but no one wants to talk about it and the topic is always brushed under the carpet because if Bhukari fails 90% of traditional Islam goes out of the window!
