MQM quits PPP-led ruling coalition
KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Monday announced its decision to pull out of PPP-led ruling coalition in centre and Sindh.
The decision was announced after an urgent meeting of MQM’s Rabita Committees, held simultaneously in London and Karachi.
The latest decision came in reaction to postponement of elections on two seats for Legislative Assembly of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
On Sunday, MQM chief Altaf Hussain also called for annulment of AJK polls. He said that the endgame has begun for the ruling government from Sunday.
Addressing a press conference today, MQM leader Dr. Farooq Sattar announced MQM’s decision to quit the ruling alliance.
He said that MQM had unconditionally extended its support to the PPP government for the cause of democracy. He said that MQM continued to convey its apprehensions to President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani.
He said that despite criticism of opposition parties, MQM continued to support the government. Dr. Sattar said that
MQM would sit on opposition benches in centre and Sindh.
“We had been pressurized by Interior Minister Rehman Malik to withdraw from at least one seat of AJK Legislative Assembly in Karachi,” he alleged.
“We were warned that elections in Karachi would be postponed if MQM did not withdraw from one seat.”
“Our workers at every level feel that we should quit the government now.”
He said that the PPP government postponed elections in Karachi. The PPP government adopted dictatorial, brutal and unjust tactics for just one seat.
In another major development, Dr. Ishratul Ebad also tendered his resignation as Governor of Sindh. SAMAA
