NDA DEVI (India): Former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram and his father on Tuesday visited their ancestral village in northern India for the first time after the creation of Pakistan in 1947. The two were warmly greeted by local residents.

“If this village can produce one Wasim Akram, it can surely produce more,” star left-arm fast bowler Akram said to thunderous applause from residents assembled in a sports stadium 22 kilometres (14 miles) northeast of Amritsar, a northern Indian city bordering Pakistan’s Punjab province. Later, Akram gave tips to young cricket players. Akram’s father, Chaudhary Mohammad Akram, said his family decided to migrate to Pakistan in 1947 after Hindu-Muslim riots broke out during the partition of India.

During Tuesday’s visit, Wasim Akram said he was overwhelmed by the affection of people and promised to do something to promote cricket in the area. Local residents presented the two with a brick from their ancestral home and a handful of soil from the village land. “No other gift could match this,” Wasim Akram’s father said.

The two had been invited to visit the village by Swaran Singh Munim, a local resident, during a recent visit to Pakistan. “I read an interview of Akram in which he stated that he belonged to Chawinda Devi. I could not believe that such a big cricket star belonged to my village, and I met the Akram family in Lahore and invited them to come here,” Munim said. Wasim Akram said that he supported the peace process between India and Pakistan, and that cricket could play a vital role in building bridges of friendship between the two countries. ap

Yep we ask (demand) for equal rights in UK and everywhere else but in Pak treat minorities like dirt. If u follow this approach through minorities have no chance of playing in the national squad let alone becoming a hero - nah that's to much 2 ask.

As someone rightly pointed out he is famous for his cricket and not his religious views. Its his personal act and most of the times you have to be courteous and let them do things that you may not approve of - we don't know how he feels or what was he feeling at that time so we should not pass any judgments.

A quick search yielded these pics - I am sure hindu extremists must be passing similar judgement on these people....you may argue that they are doing it for their personal gain and may even say that you consider it a deviant practice in Islam and may call it bidaa or shirk or whatever but thats besides the point. The point is that they do these things too and I am sure that if they could freely travel to Pakistan you may see their pics at Data Darbar - some people in these pics I know and some I have no clue about:
