A pill to overcome fear of heights (Acrophobia - a fear of high places and edges)
(IANS)

29 March 2011

LONDON - Giving people a tablet of the stress hormone cortisol can help reduce their fear of heights.
The hormone, which is part of the body’s “fight or flight” reaction to danger, appears to open the brain up to being reprogrammed and to permanently remove anxieties.
Tests on 40 patients with acrophobia - a fear of high places and edges - found those given cortisol in combination with behavioral therapy dramatically reduced their aversion.
Acrophobia triggers a sense of panic when at height and is not the same as vertigo that causes a feeling of spinning and dizziness.
The researchers said their findings, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could lead to the development of effective treatments for a host of anxiety disorders.
Half the participants were given the drug and the others a placebo an hour before being subjected to a virtual-reality outdoor elevator ride, the Telegraph reports.
Their fear was measured three to five days and one month after the last exposure session through an established acrophobia questionnaire and by sensors that picked up their sweat known as skin conductance examinations.
Compared with those given the dummy pill, participants who took cortisol suffered significantly less anxiety and a smaller increase in skin conductance during follow-up.
Dominique De Quervain, neuroscientist at Basel University in Switzerland, and colleagues said this suggests cortisol can enhance “exposure therapy” to reduce fear of heights.
Researchers said: “Adding cortisol to exposure therapy resulted in a significantly greater reduction in fear of heights as measured with
the acrophobia questionnaire both at post-treatment and at follow-up, compared with placebo.”

Avoid coffee with fast food
(IANS)

1 April 2011
Avoid coffee during a fast food meal because it could have dangerous repercussions for your well-being as it causes a spike in blood sugar levels.
A healthy person’s blood sugar levels shoot up after eating a high-fat meal, but that spike doubles after having both a fatty meal and caffeinated coffee - jumping to levels similar to those of people at risk of diabetes, says Marie-Soleil Beaudoin from University of Guelph.
“The results tell us that saturated fat interferes with the body’s ability to clear sugars from the blood and, when combined with caffeinated coffee, the impact can be even worse,” said Beaudoin, doctoral student who conducted the study, reports the Journal of Nutrition.
coffee1_01042011.jpg
“Having sugar remain in our blood for long periods is unhealthy because it can take a toll on our body’s organs,” adds Beaudoin, who conducted the study with Guelph professors Lindsay Robinson and Terry Graham, according to a University of Guelph statement.

The study is the first to examine the effects of saturated fat and caffeinated coffee on blood sugar levels using a novel fat cocktail which contains only lipids.
This specially designed beverage allows researchers to accurately mimic what happens to the body when we ingest fat.
For the study, healthy men drank about one gram of the fat beverage for every kilogram of body weight for their first meal. Six hours later, they were given a second meal consisting of a sugar drink.
Typically when we ingest sugar, the body produces insulin, which takes the sugar out of the blood and distributes it to our muscles, said Beaudoin.
But the researchers found that the fatty meal affected the body’s ability to clear the sugar out of the blood. The subjects’ blood sugar levels were 32 percent higher than they were when the men had not ingested the fat cocktail.

A mixture of medication, non-drug therapies can help treat fibromyalgia
(Staff Reporter)

2 April 2011
DUBAI - Fibromyalgia a disorder that causes widespread muscle pain and tenderness is often misunderstood and even unrecognised by patients and some doctors.
Dr Adnan Abdulwahid, Rheumatologist, Zulekha Hospital, Sharjah said that fibromyalgia is defined by chronic widespread muscular pain and symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, stiffness, cognitive and memory problems, and symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Applying the label of ‘fibromyalgia’ to the syndrome of widespread pain without attempting to identify an underlying pathophysiological process makes treatment of patients with this symptom more difficult, he said. Because of these vague symptoms, fibromyalgia is often either misdiagnosed or unrecognised, he said. The causes of fibromyalgia may be different in different people. However, it is very likely that there are certain types of genes that can predispose people to developing fibromyalgia and other co-occurring conditions.
“Genes alone do not, however, cause fibromyalgia. There is usually some triggering factor, such as spine disorders, arthritis, trauma, and other types of physical stressors and emotional stressors.”
Because fibromyalgia can cause chronic pain and fatigue similar to arthritis, it may be thought of as a rheumatic condition. As a result, it is often the rheumatologist who makes the diagnosis (and rules out other rheumatic diseases) and gives the proper treatment.
Patients with fibromyalgia typically have fatigue, wake up tired, and have bladder problems and numbness or tingling. - Fibromyalgia must be managed as a chronic condition. Management should include both medication and non-drug treatments, said the doctor. Research suggests that yoga intervention has led to a beneficial shift in how patients cope with pain, including greater use of adaptive pain-coping strategies.[email protected]

Retain your muscle strength in old age
(IANS)

2 April 2011
Not only can adults fight the battle of strength and muscle loss that comes with age but the golden years can be a time to get stronger.
“Resistance exercise is a great way to increase lean muscle tissue and strength capacity,” says Mark Peterson, research fellow at the University of Michigan’s department of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

health_02042011.jpg
Progressive resistance training means that the amount of weight used and the frequency and duration of training sessions is altered over time to accommodate an individual’s improvements, the American Journal of Medicine reports.
Through resistance training, adults can improve their ability to stand up out of a chair, walk across the floor, climb a flight of stairs—anything that requires manipulating their own body mass through a full range of motions, according to a Michigan statement.
Normally, adults who are sedentary beyond age 50 can expect muscle loss of up to 0.4 pounds a year. “But even earlier in adulthood - the 30s, 40s and 50s - you can begin to see declines if you do not engage in any strengthening activities,” Peterson says.
“No matter what age an individual is, they can experience significant strength improvement with progressive resistance exercise even into the eighth and ninth decades of life,” Peterson says.

“Hi Ho, Hi Ho, Off to Work I wish I didn’t have to Go!”
Samineh I. Shaheem

2 April 2011
If you’re reading the title and thinking that something isn’t right or that the famous chant of the seven dwarfs has changed, you’re quite right. However, another reaction to the new lyrics could be that you totally relate to them and have a similar song of discontent of your own every morning as you reluctantly set off to work.
We spend, on average, anywhere between 1700-2100 hours a year at work. Considering the substantial time spent engaging in this activity, one would think that most people, who have a choice of course, would be more selective regarding their occupation and consciousness of their levels of job satisfaction.
Unfortunately that isn’t the case. Of course, at times we all complain about different matters such as our boss, difficult colleagues, unaccommodating clients, salary, hours or the commute to work but research exploring the connectivity of job satisfaction and health suggests that in the long run, hating your job might be worse for you than dealing with the stress of having no job at all.
In the current economic and financial state, having a job is somewhat of a luxury and discussing job satisfaction might seem trivial. In spite of this, when we uncover the health implications of not enjoying the type of work we do puts things into an important bracket, worthy of consideration. Especially after recent announcements by agencies such as the CIPD, claiming that only 37 per cent of Brits say they are satisfied at work.
When dissatisfied with our work, we feel unmotivated, unenthusiastic and robbed of energy by having to engage in uninteresting or uninspiring work. If you’re not sure if you are one of these people, spend a few moments reflecting on the following questions:
u Do you hate Sunday mornings and wish the weekend would never end?
u Do you have trouble waking up every morning?
u Do you spend extended periods of time daydreaming at work?
u Do you take longer breaks than you should?
u Are you irritable and moody around your colleagues?
u Are you often late for work?
u Do you feel exhausted throughout the day?
u Do you complain excessively?
u Do you have crying spells without knowing why?
u Do you repeatedly check the time throughout the day?
u Do feel like you don’t belong to the work environment you are part of?
So if we aren’t exactly bouncing out of bed to go to work, what are the long-term health consequences of job dissatisfaction? The list is long including outcomes such as sleeping difficulties, a decrease in immune functionality, fatigue, stress, absenteeism, job performance, loss or increase in appetite, low productivity, inability to concentrate, lack of interest and frequent illnesses.
According to a recent report by the General Social Survey, here are the 10 most gratifying jobs and the percentage of those who said they were very satisfied:

u Fire Fighters 80%
u Physical Therapists 78%
u Authors 74%
u Special Education Teachers 70%
u Teachers 69%
u Education Administrators 68%
u Painters and Sculptors 67%
u Psychologists 67%
u Security and Financial Services Salespersons 65%
u Operating Engineers 64%
u Office Supervisors 61%
Here are the ten least pleasing jobs, with the lowest percentages of satisfaction:
u Laborers, except construction 21%
u Apparel Salespersons 24%
u Hand packers and Packagers 24%
u Food Preparers 24%
u Roofers 25%
u Cashiers 25%
u Furniture and Home-Furnishing Salespersons 25%
u Bartenders 26%
u Freight, Stock and Material Handlers 26%
u Waiters and Servers 27%
Now before you run off to become a firefighter, do keep in mind other important variables such as personality traits, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, past experience, interests which certainly have an effect on job gratification.
There are times we stay in a job because we don’t have other options and if this is the case, we should try and focus more on the positive contribution we are making, rather than pondering over the negatives. After all every job serves an important purpose and your value should not be forgotten. Take things as they come and approach each day as a potential opportunity to learn.

Working 11 hours ups heart attack risk
(IANS)

5 April 2011
LONDON - People who spend more than 11 hours a day at work increase their chances of having a heart attack by 67 percent, a study has found.
A team from University College London looked at more than 7,000 civil servants over a period of 11 years and established how many hours they worked on an average a day.

They also collected information, including the condition of their heart, from medical records and health checks. Over the period, 192 had suffered a heart attack, reports the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

The study found that those who worked more than 11 hours a day were 67 percent more likely to have a heart attack than those who had a ‘nine to five’ job, according to the Daily Mail.

Said Mika Kivimki, who led the study: “We have shown that working long days is associated with a remarkable increase in the risk of heart disease.”

The researchers say their findings could potentially prevent thousands of heart attacks a year as they would help physicians get a better idea of how likely a patient was to have one.

Patients already at high risk - by being obese or smoking, for example - could be encouraged to cut down on their working hours.

Around 2.6 million in Britain alone have heart disease, in which the organ’s blood supply is blocked by the build-up of fatty deposits in the coronary arteries. It claims 101,000 lives every year in the country.

Are vaccines helping or hurting our children?

Are vaccines helping or hurting our children?
 1. There is no scientific study to determine whether vaccines have really prevented diseases. Rather disease graphs show vaccines have been introduced at the fag end of epidemics when the disease was already in its last stages. In case of Small Pox the vaccine actually caused a great spurt in the incidence of disease before public outcry led to its withdrawal.
 2. There are no long-term studies on vaccine safety. Very short-term tests are carried out where the vaccinated subjects are checked against another group who are given another vaccine. Technically the tests should be carried out against a non-vaccinated group. No one really knows what protocols are followed at such industry-sponsored trials.
 3. There has never been any official attempt to compare a vaccinated population against a non vaccinated population to know what vaccines are doing to the children and the society. Independent private studies (Dutch & German) have revealed that vaccinated children suffer much more than their un-vaccinated counterparts.
 4. The child receives not one but many vaccines. There are no tests to determine the effects of multiple vaccines.
 5. There is no scientific basis for vaccinating infants. As per senior doctors quoted by the Times of India, "Children suffer from less that 2% of vaccine preventable illnesses but 98% of the vaccines are targeted towards them." The vaccine pioneers who have recommended abundant caution before vaccinating the population have never advocated mass vaccinations.
 6. Children are vaccinated simply because parents can be frightened to forcefully vaccinate their children. Vaccinating infants is the most profitable business both for the manufacturers as well as the doctors.
 7. Infants, who are advised ONLY mothers milk till the age of six months and beyond because their fragile system will not tolerate anything else are given 30 extremely toxic vaccine shots, including booster doses, an act that defies both logic and science.
 8. The Government of India has come out with a quarter page advertisement in The Hindu warning parents not to vaccinate beyond the Government approved vaccines. Parents have been advised against vaccinating in private clinics and hospitals.
 9. The Orissa Chapter of the Indian Association of Pediatricians has admitted in a letter to the CM, Orissa, that private clinics and hospitals are ill equipped to store vaccines and warned parents not to vaccinate upon the advise of private practitioners and hospitals.
 10. ALL THE VACCINE INGREDIENTS ARE EXTREMELY TOXIC IN NATURE.
 11. Vaccines contain heavy metals, cancer causing substances, toxic chemicals, live and genetically modified viruses, contaminated serum containing animal viruses and foreign genetic material, extremely toxic de-contaminants and adjuvants, untested antibiotics, none of which can be injected without causing any harm.
 12. The mercury, aluminum and live viruses in vaccines may be behind the huge epidemic of autism (1 in 10 worldwide as per doctors in the USA, 1 in 37 as per a private study by doctors in New Delhi), a fact that (vaccines cause autism) has been admitted by the US Vaccine Court.
 13. The CDC of USA, the vaccine watchdog, has publicly admitted that its much-publicized 2003 study denying any link between vaccines and autism, is flawed. The Chief of CDC Dr Gerberding has confessed to the media (CNN) that vaccines can cause "autism like symptoms". The Autism epidemic is found only in those countries that have allowed mass vaccinations.
 14. In the year 1999, the US Government instructed vaccine manufacturers to remove mercury from vaccines "with immediate effect". But mercury still remains a part of many vaccines. The vaccines with mercury were never recalled and were given to children up to the year 2006. "Mercury free" vaccines contain 0.05mcg of mercury, enough to permanently damage a infant. As per an American Academy of Pediatricians study: "Mercury in all of its forms is toxic to the fetus and children and efforts should be made to reduce exposure to the extent possible to pregnant women and children as well as the general population."
 15. IN INDIA NO ATTEMPT HAS BEEN MADE TO ENSURE THAT MERCURY AND OTHER HEAVY METALS ARE REMOVED FROM VACCINES SIMPLY BECAUSE IT WOULD MAKE VACCINES COSTLIER.
 16. In a reply to then President Sri Abdul Kalam, the Health Ministry informed, "mercury is required to make the vaccines safe". To the author's query that "what are these vaccines that it requires the second most dangerous neurotoxin, mercury, to make them safe?", there was no reply.
 17. Mercury used in vaccines is second in toxicity only to the radioactive substance, Uranium. It is a neurotoxin that can damage the entire nervous system of the infant in no time.
 18. Mercury accumulates in fat. The brain being made mostly of fat cells, most of the mercury accumulates there giving rise to the peculiar symptoms of the autistic children.
 19. The mercury used in vaccines is ethyl mercury. According to Indian doctors this is an industrial toxin and is 1000 times more toxic than the usual methyl mercury.
 20. The aluminum present in vaccines makes the mercury, in any form, 100 times more toxic.
 21. As per an independent study aluminum and formaldehyde present in vaccines can increase the toxicity of mercury, in any form, by 1000 times.
 22. As per a Tehelka article on Autism, if one considers the WHO limit for mercury in water, they are receiving 50,000 times the limit. The limits set, incidentally, are for adults and not infants.
 23. Autism in India has emerged as the most rapidly growing epidemic amongst children. As per a private study done by doctors in New Delhi, from 1 in 500 it has steadily climbed to 1 in 37 today. As per Indian doctors, "You can go to any class of any school today and find an autistic child."
 24. Autism is a permanent disability that affects the child physically, mentally and emotionally. It makes the child loose social contact. It impedes both the physical and mental growth of the child. It destroys the brain causing severe memory and attention problems. The majority of symptoms displayed by autistic children match symptoms of heavy metal poisoning.
 25. According to vaccine researcher Dr Harris Coulter, vaccines cause children to become pervert and criminal. Majority of the school shootings by the children in the USA have been committed by autistic children. Vaccines can cause more harm that even the medical community privately acknowledges.
 26. Autistic children also suffer from severe bowel disorders. As per Dr Andrew Wakefield, this is due to the vaccine strain live measles virus in the MMR vaccine. Nearly all children become fully autistic after the MMR shot. As per a recent study the MMR vaccine has an adverse effect on the vital mucosal immune system. The very basis of trying to prevent childhood Mumps and Measles has been questioned in this study.
 27. The DPT also causes children to regress giving rise to fears that multiple live virus vaccines are an important cause behind autism. If three live viruses can cause so much harm we can well imagine what todays five and seven viruses vaccines will do to children.
 28. Before the autism epidemic, it was already well known that vaccines have caused the cancer epidemic in todays society. Both the Small Pox and the Oral Polio Vaccine are made from monkey serum. This serum has helped many cancer causing monkey viruses, 60 found so far (SV 1 to SV60), to enter the human blood stream. As per recent revelations these viruses continue to be in the vaccines.
 29. It is also known that it is the use of green monkey serum in vaccines that has led to the transfer of the Simian Immune deficiency Virus (SIV) from monkeys into humans. The SIV and the HIV that causes AIDS are very similar.
 30. Not only AIDS, a blood cancer in infants (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) that is affecting children in thousands may also be primarily due to the extremely toxic nature of vaccine ingredients injected directly into the blood stream.
 31. Infantile jaundice and also infantile diabetes is also scientifically connected to the toxic vaccines.
 32. The live polio viruses used in the Oral Polio Vaccine has caused Vaccine Attributed Paralytic Polio in more than 1,25,000 children (up to the year 2006) as per doctors of the Indian Medical Association and the Jana Swasthya Abhiyan. The OPV has also let loose a new strain of polio in both India and Africa. The OPV is banned in the USA & European countries.
 33. Vaccines contain serum from not only chimpanzees and monkeys but also from cows, pigs, chickens, eggs, horses, and even human serum and tissues extracted from aborted fetuses.
 34. Deaths and permanent disability from vaccines is very common and known by the medical community. They are instructed by the Government to keep quiet and not to associate such cases with vaccines.
 35. Many doctors argue that diseases during childhood are due to the body exercising its immune system. Suppressing these diseases causes the immune system to remain undeveloped causing the various autoimmune disorders like diabetes and arthritis that have become epidemics today.
 36. Vaccines suppress the natural immunity and the body does not have natural antibodies anymore. The mothers milk therefore does not contain natural antibodies and can no longer protect the child against illnesses.
 37. By stimulating humoral (blood related) immunity alone vaccines have caused an imbalance in the whole immune set up leading to an alarming increase in auto immune disorders. This is acknowledged by the immunologists themselves.
 38. In the USA vaccine adverse effects are recorded and the Government offers compensation of millions of dollars to victims (the most recent case in its Vaccine Court may have received upto $200 million in damages). The Indian Government simply refuses to acknowledge that vaccines can cause deaths and permanent disability.
 39. It has been scientifically proven that vaccines cannot prevent disease. Vaccines try to create humoral (blood related immunity) whereas it has been found that immunity is developed at various levels, humoral as well as cellular. We still do not know enough about the human immune system and therefore should not interfere with it.
 40. In the USA parents are informed about vaccine after effects and their consent has to be taken before vaccinating their children. In India the Government assures the population through massive advertising campaigns that vaccines are extremely safe. Parents refusing to vaccinate are threatened by the administration.
 41. THERE IS NO SYSTEM OF TREATMENT TO TREAT A VACCINE DAMAGED CHILD. The parents have to run from one hospital to another. The Government turns a blind eye and refuses to even acknowledge the vaccine connection. Attempts by private practitioners worldwide to treat vaccine damaged children by flushing out heavy metals and toxins from the body have been frowned upon and discouraged.
 42. Senior medical doctors have challenged even the vaccines recommended by the Government of India. The BCG vaccine for tuberculosis has been extensively tested in India as long back as 1961 and found to be totally ineffective. The OPV is causing polio and other neurological and intestinal disorders in tens of thousands of Indian children. The Hep-B vaccine introduced recently is not meant for children at all, it is a vaccine for a sexually transmitted disease that should be targeted only at promiscuous adults. The tetanus vaccine contains both aluminum and mercury besides the tetanus toxoid. The doctors themselves avoid giving the DPT to their children and relatives as per a survey amongst US health care professionals. The measles vaccine is a vaccine that regularly causes severe adverse effects and the health workers I have interviewed want it out.
 43. The pediatricians are introducing dubious vaccines in India, which are being opposed by the doctors, politicians, and public in American and European countries. The Rotavirus vaccine, Hib vaccine, HPV vaccine and the various multi virus vaccines being introduced without any kind of testing is only because the vaccine manufacturers and the doctors administering them want to ensure a good income from them. They care two hoots about medical ethics and the fate of the children who will receive these vaccines. Vaccines containing nano particles and viruses and also plant based genetically modified vaccines are being opposed by honest doctors worldwide.
 44. Various independent studies, notably the Dutch and the more recent German study, comparing vaccinated with unvaccinated children have found that vaccinated children are prone to asthma, dermatitis, allergies, hyperactivity etc. The death rate amongst vaccinated children is much more than the unvaccinated ones.
 45. Vaccines, being a mass medical program which is accepted without question, becomes the perfect launching pad for bioterrorism. The powerful countries can spread lethal epidemics by just polluting the vaccines with bio warfare agents. The USA has handed over vaccine research to a bioterrorism research unit called the BARDA which functions under the Pentagon. A warning to this effect has been sounded by the Vice President IAP in a letter to the DGHS.
 46. Besides "investigating" into the small pox virus, it is reported that a "weapons grade" bird flu vaccine has already been devised by the Pentagon to be used as biowarfare agents.
 47. Vaccines have also been used to ensure population control. A batch of the tetanus vaccine has been used in many Asian countries to make the female population sterile. This was done by introducing a hormone that by inducing antibodies would abort the foetus when it is formed. In India, Saheli, a NGO fighting for the rights of women filed a PIL against this when the fact surfaced.
 48. Mercury, a part of vaccines, is known to interfere with the endocrine system and induce sterility in both males and females.
 49. Through a new Public Health Bill that is being drafted the Government of India is planning to introduce forced vaccinations and threaten anti-vaccination activists with steep fines and jail terms. This is obviously at the instance of foreign (read US) vaccine giants who are shifting base to India reeling at the tremendous opposition to vaccines in US and European countries. The Govt of India is planning a "vaccine park" at Chennai where these vaccine MNCs will set up base. This itself is an act of bioterrorism which ironically the proposed bill seeks to oppose.
 50. As per the IOM, USA, vaccine research for a probable link between vaccines and autism should not be conducted. The Institute of Medicine in its last report on vaccines and autism in 2004 said that more research on the vaccine question is counterproductive: Finding a susceptibility to this risk in some infants would call into question the universal vaccination strategy that is a bedrock of immunization programs and could lead to widespread rejection of vaccines. The IOM concluded that efforts to find a link between vaccines and autism "must be balanced against the broader benefit of the current vaccine program for all children". What does this add up to? Infants should be sacrificed in order to perpetuate an unscientific procedure?

WHO warn of antibiotic overuse
(AFP)

7 April 2011
GENEVA — The World Health Organisation warned Wednesday that drug resistance fueled partly by a misuse of antibiotics is killing hundreds of thousands of people a year and that urgent action was needed on the issue.
“We’re really seeing an accelerated evolution in the spread of this problem and the bottomline is that the problem is outpacing the solutions,” said Keiji Fukuda, WHO assistant director general.
Health experts noted that few countries across the world have plans to deal with the issue, which is ballooning amid an increased consumption of antibiotics.

health1_07042011.jpg

“In the vast majority of the countries — there are no plans, no budgets, there are no accountability lines for this extremely serious problem,” said Mario Raviglione, who heads the WHO’s campaign against tuberculosis.

“Surveillance systems are weak, they are absent in many places,” he noted, adding that the quality of antibiotics is questionable in some of these countries.
“Suboptimal doses are actually those that steer the mechanism to develop drug resistance. The use of antibiotics is often inappropriate, we call it irrational. It facilitates the creation of drug resistance.”
In addition, the use of antibiotics in livestock production — to promote growth and prevent diseases as well as to treat sick animals — also contributes to increased drug resistance.
Any drug-resistant microbes developed in livestock can be transferred to humans through the food chain.
As microbes will always seek to become resistant to drugs, “the problem is never going to go away”, noted Fukuda.
“The more important issue is how long it would be to step up to the plate and get action underway,” he said.
The UN health agency is highlighting the problem on the occasion of this year’s World Health Day.
It wants governments, but also civil society and the pharmaceutical industry to come up with strategies to deal with drug resistance.
Raviglione acknowledged that incentives would be necessary to get profit-driven drug-makers to invest in solutions.
“If you try to estimate how much the industry today invests in antibiotic resistance, the statistics are not available but the best estimate is five percent because it’s not considered the real market. Can they do more? Yes.
“But the only way is to really study incentives that will place the industry in a much more comfortable position to continue the development of antibiotics.”

Car pollution can damage brain
(AFP)

7 April 2011
WASHINGTON — Being exposed to highway pollution can cause brain damage in mice akin to memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease, US researchers said Thursday.
Scientists recreated the airborne pollutants that come from the burning of fossil fuels and the weathering of car parts and pavement, and exposed mice to the harsh air for 15 hours per week over 10 weeks.
The tiny air particles were “roughly one-thousandth the width of a human hair, and too small for car filtration systems to trap,” but exerted massive damage on the brains of the exposed mice, said the study.
“You can’t see them, but they are inhaled and have an effect on brain neurons that raises the possibility of long-term brain health consequences of freeway air,” said senior author Caleb Finch of the University of Southern California.
Scientists found that the exposure resulted in “significant damage” to neurons involved in learning and memory, and they detected “signs of inflammation associated with premature aging and Alzheimer’s disease.”
The study is published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Health Perspectives.
More research is necessary to determine if the same effects could be seen in humans.
“Of course this leads to the question, ‘How can we protect urban dwellers from this type of toxicity?’ And that’s a huge unknown,” Finch said.

Watch out for excessive hair fall
(Staff Reporter)

Hair is a part of the body with vestigial functions but carrying considerable significance in a person’s psychological well being, according to an expert.
Hair loss can start as a few strands in the sink or comb, progressing to clumps of hair with each brushing or washing or even complete bald patches, said Dr Aswathi Prasad, Specialist Dermatologist, Zulekha Hospital, Sharjah.
Hair grows in cycles - it grows rests and the falls out. Shedding of 50-100 hairs per day is considered normal, explained the expert, adding that when a hair is shed it is replaced by a new hair from the same follicle.
The most common type of hair loss is baldness or androgenetic alopecia in males and females. “Baldness is not a disease, it’s related to age, heredity and male hormones,” said Dr Aswathi.
“A sudden physical or emotional stress may cause severe hair fall lasting for months to years. This can also happen after delivery, infections or a major surgery.”
One important cause of hair loss is inadequate nutrition, especially in young adults on a crash diet or diet deficient in protein and iron, she adds.
Hair loss at times can be an indicator of an underlying thyroid gland dysfunction. Use of some medications can also cause hair loss. Excessive use of shampoos and conditioners, blow drying, chemical treatments and even certain hair styles as pig tails and corn rows can lead to hair fall.
Some unusual patterns of hair loss include round smooth patches of baldness called alopecia areata, ring worm or bacterial infections of scalp.
At times, hair loss needs a detailed evaluation to find out any underlying medical illnesses with the help of blood tests, microscopic examination of hair and at times a biopsy of the scalp as well, said the doctor.
Depending on the type of hair fall treatments vary. Patterned baldness cannot be cured, but many treatments are available to diminish the progression which will help in controlling the hair fall in male and female and stimulating new growth.
Certain supportive care treatments like mesotherapy and micro needling are found to be very effective, especially in generalised loss, she said.
Hair transplantation is yet another method to correct baldness. Alopecia areata (the term describing hair loss) can be treated with injections, medicines to apply and oral medications.
Hair fall occurs normally, but if you are losing hair excessively it can be your body’s cry for help, so know when to contact your doctor.

ABC of Vitamins

The human body is like a power engine. Just as a machine needs to be fuelled constantly, our body must be replenished regularly with vitamins for it to function properly. Vitamins, which function as catalysts and coenzymes, protect cells and are important links in the metabolic armour. Yet, very little is understood about these essential components.
U26-01f.jpg

Each of the vitamins A, C, D, E, K and B (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9 and B12) - has an individual role to play in the body. Barring vitamins B12 and D3, vitamins A, B, C, and E are dietary.

Most people believe that if they take a multi-vitamin tablet they wont fall ill, or when they cross 40 they must supplement their diet with one. Some people also believe that if theyre stressed or dieting they must then double their dose of vitamins in order to compensate.

In fact, if the multi-vitamin contains iron and minerals it leads to gastric problems. So also, vitamins - A, D3, E and K are fat-soluble. A high-dose of these vitamins can become toxic in the body and in extreme cases may even lead to mental and neurological changes like memory lapses, tremors as well as urinary incontinence.
Deficiency

There is no clinical syndrome or arithmetic to prove that if you do not intake vitamins and food today there will be a paucity of it in a couple of weeks. A lot depends on your food reserves and how much you utilise your body.

The most dependable way to replenish your body with adequate amounts of vitamins you must follow a well-balanced diet. However, it is not enough to simply consume them. You should also ensure they get absorbed into your system.

Erratic lifestyles, eating late, not chewing the food properly, binging before going to bed, consuming too much oily stuff or junk food, antibiotics, caffeine, alcohol restrict the absorption of vitamins and nutrients in the body.

Consumption of excess alcohol requires the vitamin B complex group for it to be metabolised. When alcohol gets into the system, the liver gets too busy trying to metabolise it and doesnt find the time to do its natural work, which is manufacturing proteins.

Likewise, people who smoke, go on crash diets, or intake other harmful substances can run down on vitamin reserves as well.

Diabetics have a high-deficiency of various vitamins. Vegetarians too have a lower reserve. One must go for an annual blood-test to check vitamins B12 and D3 levels as the two are unavailable in general dietary fibres. If youre low on these vitamins, you must take supplements as prescribed by the doctor.

Here are the vitamins you should ensure you get:
Vitamin A
(Retinol/Beta Carotene)

Its needed for healthy eyes and bone development. It also helps in healing infections as it strengthens the immune system and enhances the production of RNA (Ribonucleicacid).

Found in: Cod liver oil, egg, yellow fruits and vegetables. Carotene rich foods like spirulina, wheat grass, sweet potato, carrots, green onion, spinach, Chinese cabbage, melons, peaches, yellow peppers and mango.
Vitamin B1
(Thiamine)
It helps in converting glucose into energy.

Found in: Brown rice, millet, wheat germ, nuts, wheat bran and sprouted grains.
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)

It helps in the conversion of fats, sugar, proteins into energy and the formation of red blood cells.

Found in: Milk products, yeast extract, organ meats, eggs, mushrooms and asparagus.

Vitamin B3
(Niacin)

Your cells breathe because of vitamin B3. It promotes healthy skin and maintains blood sugar levels.

Found in: Whole grains, legumes, fish, chicken, turkey as well as mushrooms.

Vitamin B5
(Pantothenic Acid)

This helps in the production of anti-stress hormones. It also promotes healthy skin, hair and nerves.

Found in: Egg, chicken, mutton, fish and vegetables such as mushrooms, avocados, whole-wheat, lentils and sunflower seeds.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is considered to be an anti-depressant. Its also involved in blood formation, is fundamental for protein metabolism and nervous system function.

Found in: Meat, salmon, banana, broccoli, red kidney beans, asparagus, cauliflower, cabbage and all green leafy vegetables.

Vitamin B9
(Folic acid)

This vitamin is important for pregnant women as it helps the synthesis of DNA and protein. It is also essential for red blood cell formation.

Found in: Whole grains, chicken, liver, spinach, red kidney beans, raspberry, beet root, asparagus, cashews, peanuts, chick peas, avocado, wheat germ, and tomato juice.

Vitamin B12

Helps maintain healthy nervous system, required for normal growth and production of red blood cells. It also helps break down fatty acids. Vitamin B12 is manufactured only in the colon, that too in inadequate quantities.

found in: It is not a problem for meat eaters. Unfortunately, the only source for vegetarians is the faecal content in water and that doesnt help. Some fermented food like quick pickles, soya, tofu and spirulina have B12.

Vitamin C

This aids in tissue healing, formation of bones and teeth. It is also a rich anti-oxidant.

Found in: Fruits and vegetables like guava, lemons, papaya, strawberry, melon, grapes, sprouted seeds, beans, broccoli, bell peppers, oranges, parsley and cauliflower.

Vitamin D3

This is essential for metabolism, skeletal formation and teeth. It promotes the absorption of calcium. Yet only 10-15 per cent of the vitamin content comes from a balanced diet. The rest is derived from sunlight, which is absorbed through the skin.

Found in: Sunlight. Long-hours in air-conditioned spaces and pollution make it hard. Even sunscreen lotion prevents absorption. We need supplements of Vitamin D3. Consuming fish, sardine, tuna, egg, and green leafy vegetables also helps.

Vitamin E

A healthy dose of vitamin E detoxifies the liver. It is an antioxidant, protects cells and helps maintain red blood cells.

Found in: Soya beans, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, whole grains, nuts, legumes, outer leaves of cabbage, asparagus, cucumbers and sprouted grains.

Vitamin K

It is important in the blood clotting process.

Found in: The cabbage family - broccoli, green and red cabbage, pack choy flower, cauliflower, turnip, knol khol (ganth gobi), legumes, potatoes, tomatoes, alpha alpha, asparagus and green leafy vegetables.
Our panel includes Consulting Physician and CardioMetabolic Specialist, Dr Hemant P Thacker, Endocrinologist and Diabetologist, Dr Hemraj Chandalia and Microbiotic Food Consultant, Shonali Sabherwal.

Chitrangda Singhs vitamin Fundas

I believe in natural sources of vitamins. There is so much available in nature itself. Every fruit and vegetable has so many natural vitamins that I dont need to subscribe to artificial sources.

That is because I eat healthy.

I try and maintain a balanced diet by making sure my body gets what it needs. But a lot of youngsters these days dont believe in eating vegetable and fruits so I would recommend that they have multi-vitamins as essentials.

Islamic remedies: Milk is excellent for general health

ALMIGHTY Allah said: And verily! In the cattle, there is a lesson for you. We give you to drink of that which is in their bellies, from between excretions and blood, pure milk; palatable to the drinkers. (16:66)
In the Sunah it is narrated:
Whoever Allah gives some type of food, let him supplicate, O Allah! Bless it for us and grant us what is better. Whoever Allah grants some laban, let him say, O Allah! Bless it for us and grant us more of it, for I do not know of a more complete food or drink than milk.
Hadith
Abu Huraira reported that Allahs Messenger (peace be upon him) was presented two cups at Bait Al-Maqdis on the night of Heavenly Journey, one containing wine and the other containing milk. He looked at both of them, and he took the one containing milk, whereupon Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: Praise is due to Allah Who guided you to the true nature; had you taken the one containing wine, your Ummah would have gone astray.
Milk is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium. It has an important role in strengthening the bones.
Nutrients
Milk and milk products contain a good balance of protein, fat and carbohydrate and are a very important source of essential nutrients including: Calcium, riboflavin, phosphorous, Vitamins A, D and B12 and pantothenic acid.
Milk products also contain high quality proteins that are well-suited to human needs. Milk proteins increase the value of poorer quality cereal and vegetable proteins in the diet by providing amino acids these proteins lack.
Milk and tooth decay
The amounts of calcium and phosphorous in milk and dairy products are also beneficial for the development and maintenance of healthy teeth. The most abundant protein in milk is casein and is protective as it forms a thin film on the enamel surface which prevents loss of calcium and phosphate from the enamel when the teeth are exposed to acids in the mouth. In fact, dentists recommend that milk is the only safe drink to have between meals (except for water) as it has been shown not causing tooth decay even in conditions perfect for damaging teeth!
Bone health
Milk and dairy products are providers of calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and protein which are all essential for healthy bone growth and development.
Adequate consumption of milk and dairy products from early childhood and throughout life can help make the bones strong and protect them against diseases like osteoporosis (a debilitating, brittle bone disorder) in later life.
If milk and milk products are removed from the diet, it can lead to an inadequate intake of calcium. This is of particular concern for women and the elderly, who have high calcium needs. Calcium deficiency may lead to disorders like osteoporosis (a disease characterized by bone loss).
Milk and blood pressure
An increasing number of studies suggest that consuming three portions of dairy each day, along with five portions of fruit and vegetables as part of a low-salt diet can reduce high blood pressure in both adults and children.
Although the exact mechanisms involved are not clear, it is thought that the calcium, potassium, magnesium and proteins within milk are all likely to be involved.
A research in the US has found that high intake of fruits and vegetables, combined with low-fat dairy foods, will lower blood pressure more than fruits and vegetables alone.
Milk and cardiovascular disease
Several studies have linked milk and dairy consumption with a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease. A recent study on Welsh men found that those who drank the milk most had fewer heart attacks than those who had little or no milk in their diets. This connection could be due to many factors, but epidemiological studies have shown that higher intakes of calcium in particular are linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
More specifically, studies have shown that high calcium intakes may reduce high levels of bad cholesterol in the blood, and increase low levels of good cholesterol both of which are known risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Obesity
Contrary to popular belief, research has shown that people who consume milk and dairy foods are likely to be slimmer than those who do not.
Studies have also shown that consumption of milk and dairy foods as part of a calorie-controlled diet is associated with increased weight loss, particularly form the abdomen. This is particularly beneficial since excess fat around the trunk region of the body is associated with greater risks to health. The precise mechanisms involved are unclear but are likely to involve calcium which is found in milk and dairy foods.
Type 2 diabetes
Studies suggest that regular consumption of low-fat dairy products can help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, which has been a longstanding problem in adults, and is becoming increasingly common in children and adolescents.
It is thought that this effect may be due to the combined effects of many beneficial nutrients found within dairy foods including calcium and magnesium, or the fact that dairy foods have a low glycaemic index, which helps to control blood sugar levels.
A recent study of more than 37,000 middle-aged women found that those with the highest intake of dairy products had a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.
A 10-year study of 3,000 overweight adults found that consuming milk and other milk products instead of refined sugars and carbohydrates may protect overweight young adults from developing type 2 diabetes

Hydration
In order to remain adequately hydrated, it is recommended that we consume 6-8 cups of fluid each day. If we become dehydrated, it can result in poor concentration and memory malfunction and leave you feeling irritable and unwell.
Milk is an excellent choice of fluid as it not only re-hydrates the body, but provides a host of beneficial nutrients and protects the teeth at the same time!
Cancer
There is considerable evidence to suggest that milk has a protective effect on risk of both colorectal and breast cancer with increased intakes. A recent study of 45,000 Swedish men reported that men who drank 1.5 glasses of milk per day or more, had 35% lower risk of the disease than those who had a low milk intake of less than two glasses per week.
Additionally a study of over 40,000 Norwegian women found that those who drank milk as children and continued to do so as adults, had a lower risk of developing breast cancer.
Calcium and a naturally occurring fat in dairy products known as Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) have been suggested as protective components in colon cancer.
Colon cancer some studies have found that people who regularly eat dairy products have a reduced risk of developing colon cancer.
Daily calcium requirement
To meet the bodys daily calcium requirement, it is recommended that one consumes between two to three serves of dairy products a day. One serve is equivalent to 250ml of milk, 35g (one matchbox-sized piece) of cheese and 200g yoghurt (four small scoops) of icecream.
Consumption of milk and dairy products is associated with numerous health benefits.

Vegetarian diet linked to lower cataract risk
(Reuters)

10 April 2011
Eating less meat and more vegetables is tied to a lower risk of cataracts, a British study says.
In a large dietary survey that followed people for as long as 15 years, researchers found that about three in 50 meat eaters had cataracts, compared to about two in 50 vegans and vegetarians.

The results translated to a 30 to 40 percent lower cataract risk among vegetarians and vegans compared with the biggest meat eaters.

veg_10042011.jpg
“People who don’t eat meat have a significantly lower risk of developing cataracts,” said Naomi Allen, an epidemiologist at the UK’s University of Oxford who coauthored the study.

A cataract occurs when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, blurring vision. They’re more common in older people, and more than half of Americans either have cataracts by the time they’re 80 or have had surgery for them, according to the National Eye Institute.

The British findings do not mean that people should necessarily become vegetarians to avoid getting cataracts, Allen told Reuters Health.

The study does not prove that eating meat promotes cataracts. Eating a lot of vegetables might be protective, for instance - some past research has linked certain nutrients in plant foods to a lowered risk of cataracts. A vegetarian diet may also simply be a sign of other healthy behaviors that contribute to the lowered risk.

Smoking, diabetes, and exposure to bright sunlight are also linked to an increased risk for cataracts.

The new findings actually contradict a study done in India, where a vegetarian diet was associated with high numbers of cataracts, said Dr. Jack Dodick, who chairs the department of ophthalmology at New York University Langone Medical Center.

“It means that still to this day we don’t know what influences cataracts. It may be more lifestyle. There may be other factors in causing cataract other than diet,” Dodick, who did not work on the current study, told Reuters Health.

The British researchers asked more than 27,600 people older than 40 to fill out dietary surveys between 1993 and 1999, then monitored the participants’ medical records between 2008 and 2009 to see if they developed cataracts. Almost 1,500 had cataracts during the follow-up period.

The highest risk was seen among the heaviest meat-eaters - those who consumed more than 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of meat daily. Moderate meat eaters were only slightly less likely to develop cataracts. Fish eaters’ risk was 15 percent lower than that of the heavy meat eaters, vegetarians’ 30 percent lower and vegans’ 40 percent lower.

This study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, was well done, Dodick said, but there are “still a lot of questions that need to be answered.”

Whether nutrition really plays a role in cataract risk is still not clear cut, he said.

It’s generally accepted that if you live long enough everyone will develop a cataract, Dodick added.

Cataracts are treated by surgery. Operations typically performed in the U.S. can cost between $1,500 and $3,000.

“It’s the most performed operation in the US,” Dodick said. “Approximately 3.5 million cataract surgeries are performed a year.”

To decrease the probability of early onset cataracts, “the top of my list would be always protect eyes against ultraviolet rays when outdoors (by wearing sunglasses),” Dodick said.

“The moral of the story is, live life in moderation,” Dodick added. “A healthy active lifestyle with exercise might decrease the risk of cataracts.”

The Health Benefits of Beetroot

June 1, 2010
Brief History of Beetroot
Modern varieties of beets are derived from the sea beet, an inedible plant that grows wild along the coasts of Europe, North Africa, and Asia. The garden beet has been cultivated for thousands of years. In ancient Greece, beets were so highly valued that, according to myth, a beet was offered on a silver platter to Apollo at Delphi. Today, beets are grown in many regions of the world. The leading beet-producing regions of the United States are California, Colorado, New Jersey, Ohio, and Texas. The beet is a cool-weather biennial that is cultivated as an annual. Beets are grown from seeds sown in early spring and are ready to harvest 60 to 80 days after planting. Beets are not harmed by frost, but hot weather can toughen the roots. Thus, in regions with hotter summers, they are planted in early fall for winter and spring harvest. Consequently, fresh beets are available all year.
Nutrients in Beetroot Beet greens are a very good source of calcium, iron, Vitamins A and C. Beetroots are an excellent source of folic acid. They are a very good source of fiber, manganese and potassium. Beet greens and beetroot are a good source of phosphorus, magnesium, iron and vitamin B6.
Betacyanin is the pigment that gives beetroot its color, and has powerful antioxidant properties.

A comprehensive breakdown of nutrients can be found in the Nutrition Database where this food can also be added to a meal planner.
Beetroot for Cholesterol Reduction

Beet fiber has been shown to have cholesterol lowering capabilities. In a study on rats with induced high blood cholesterol, a red beet fiber diet caused a reduction of serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels (by 30 and 40%, respectively) and a significant increase in HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol). This diet induced also a significant decrease (almost by 30%) of cholesterol content in the aorta.

Beetroot for Blood Pressure

Beetroot juice has been shown to lower blood pressure in subjects with normal blood pressure. In healthy volunteers, approximately 3 hours after ingestion of 500 ml of beetroot juice, blood pressure was substantially reduced, an effect that correlated with peak increases in plasma nitrite concentration, nitrite being the blood pressure reducing ingredient. Beetroot and nitrate capsules are equally effective in lowering blood pressure indicating that it is the nitrate content of beetroot juice that underlies its potential to reduce blood pressure. It has also been found that only a small amount of juice is needed – just 250ml – to have this effect.
Beetroot for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention

Betaine, a nutrient found in beets and some other foods lowers plasma homocysteine, a possible risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Betaine supplements are manufactured as a byproduct of sugar beet processing. Betaine “supplementation” has however been found to increase blood LDL cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in healthy humans, which may undo the potential benefits for cardiovascular health of betaine supplementation through homocysteine lowering.
Beetroot for Healthy Liver Function
beet-juice.jpg

Beetroot contains the bioactive agent betaine, which supports healthy liver function. When the liver is functioning properly, fats are broken down efficiently, aiding weight loss, and preventing fatigue and nausea.
Beetroot for Cancer Prevention

The in vitro inhibitory effect of beet root extract on Epstein-Barr virus early antigen (EBV-EA) induction using Raji cells revealed a high order of activity compared to capsanthin, cranberry, red onion skin and short and long red bell peppers. An in vivo anti-tumor promoting activity evaluation against the mice skin and lung bioassays also revealed a significant tumor inhibitory effect. The combined findings suggest that beetroot ingestion can be a useful means to help prevent cancer. In patients that had various forms of gastritis and gastric cancer, it was found that beet juice may inhibit or enhance N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation depending on the gastric juice composition, pH in particular. In acid medium (pH-1.3-3.4) there was a trend to inhibition of NDMA synthesis, while in neutral and alkaline (pH = 7.4-8.5) medium NDMA synthesis is activated. N-nitrosodimethylamine is a nitrosamine, and is a suspected human carcinogen.

Glycemic Index of Beetroot

In a study to determine the estimated Glycemic Index of various foods, it was concluded that beetroot has a medium GI of 64.
Adverse Reactions from Beetroot

Beetroot and especially beet greens contain high levels of oxalate, and should be avoided by individuals with kidney stones containing oxalate
Beetroot contains nitrates and when they are cooked and left standing at room temperature, microorganisms that convert nitrates to nitrites begin to multiply, and the amount of nitrites in the beetroot rises. The nitrites combine with amines in the stomach to form nitrosamines, some of which are known carcinogens.

The beetroot, also known as the table beet, garden beet, red beet or informally simply as beet, is one of the many cultivated varieties of beets (Beta vulgaris) and arguably the most commonly encountered variety in North America and Britain.

As a leaf vegetable

The green leafy portion of the beet is also edible. It is most commonly served boiled or steamed, in which case it has a taste and texture similar to spinach.
Health benefits

Beetroots are a rich source of potent antioxidants and nutrients, including magnesium, sodium, potassium and vitamin C, and betaine, which is important for cardiovascular health. It functions by acting with other nutrients to reduce the concentration of homocysteine, a homologue of the naturally occurring amino acid cysteine, which can be harmful to blood vessels and thus contribute to the development of heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. Betaine functions in conjunction with S-adenosylmethionine, folic acid, and vitamins B6 and B12 to carry out this function.[2]
Additionally, several preliminary studies on both rats and humans have shown betaine may protect against liver disease, particularly the build up of fatty deposits in the liver caused by alcohol abuse, protein deficiency, or diabetes, among other causes. The nutrient also helps individuals with hypochlorhydria, a condition causing abnormally low levels of stomach acid, by increasing stomach acidity.[2]
Beetroot juice has been shown to lower blood pressure and thus help prevent cardiovascular problems. Research published in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension showed drinking 500 ml of beetroot juice led to a reduction in blood pressure within one hour. The reduction was more pronounced after three to four hours, and was measurable up to 24 hours after drinking the juice. The effect is attributed to the high nitrate content of the beetroot. The study correlated high nitrate concentrations in the blood following ingestion of the beetroot juice and the drop in blood pressure. Dietary nitrate, such as that found in the beetroot, is thought to be a source for the biological messenger nitric oxide, which is used by the endothelium to signal smooth muscle, triggering it to relax. This induces vasodilation and increased blood flow.[3]
Other studies have found the positive effects beetroot juice can have on human exercise and performances. In studies conducted by the Exeter University, scientists found cyclists who drank a half-litre of beetroot juice several hours before setting off were able to ride up to 20 per cent longer than those who drank a placebo blackcurrant juice. [4]
As a dye

Betanin, obtained from the roots, is used industrially as red food colourants, e.g. to improve the colour and flavour of tomato paste, sauces, desserts, jams and jellies, ice cream, sweets and breakfast cereals.[1] Within older bulbs of beetroot, the colour is a deep crimson and the flesh is much softer. Beetroot dye may also be used in ink.
Betanin is not broken down in the body, and in higher concentration can temporarily cause urine (termed beeturia) and stool to assume a reddish color. This effect can cause distress and concern due to the visual similarity to bloody stools or urine, but is completely harmless and will subside once the food is out of the system.
As a traditional remedy

It is a rich source of the element boron. Field Marshal Montgomery is reputed to have exhorted his troops to 'take favours in the beetroot fields', a euphemism for visiting prostitutes.[5] From the Middle Ages, beetroot was used as a treatment for a variety of conditions, especially illnesses relating to digestion and the blood. Bartolomeo Platina recommended taking beetroot with garlic to nullify the effects of 'garlic-breath'.[6]
