Does anyone know how many polio cases have there been so far in KP and Pakistan this year. I read that WHO has announced health emergency, only second time in its history.

This is a major change in the K-P government’s strategy to eradicate the virus with nine of 68 polio cases this year having emerged from the province.

On the safe side: K-P government planning to use IPVs to help eradicate polio

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has planned to administer inactivated polio vaccines (IPV), along with the oral polio vaccine (OPV) it already uses, for effective protection against poliovirus in the province.

IPV is administered via injection and according to the World Health Organization (WHO), all countries currently only using OPV should add at least one dose of IPV to their immunisation programmes. The WHO also recommends an OPV dose at birth, followed by the primary series of three OPV doses and at least 1 IPV dose.

“The IPVs will become part of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI),” EPI Deputy Director Dr Janbaz Afridi told The Express Tribune on Wednesday. Though the plan has been approved, it is undecided at the moment as to when it will be put into effect. He explained that under the programme, children under two years of age will be administered the injections in areas where polio drops have already been administered.

Increasing the provincial education budget by over 35%, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led government is likely to allocate Rs100 billion for the education sector (elementary, secondary and higher education) for fiscal year 2014-15, according to Minister for Education Muhammad Atif Khan.

During an interview with The Express Tribune, Khan said the provincial government has been focusing on education and besides constructing new schools and rehabilitating old ones the ministry has also been working on teacher training programmes.

The minister said that the total amount disbursed this past fiscal year for salaries of 210,000 education department employees was over Rs61 billion.

Talking about PTI’s Tameer-e-School Programme, the minister said 28 schools have so far been sponsored by people from within and outside the country, informing that people have donated over Rs150 million. “This amount is apart from the government-allocated budget. Overseas employees have been doing much more for their countrymen back home,” Khan said.

Lauding sacrifices: 70% budget increase for police, says CM Khattak

717507-CMKPK-1401916138-604-640x480.jpg

Chief Minister (CM) Pervez Khattak said his government has increased the police budget by 70% and revolutionary steps are being taken to make Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) a safe province.

His government has ended political interference in the police and other departments to ensure good governance and transparency, added the CM. Political interference in government departments is the ‘mother of all evils’ and its curtailment had allowed the police to become a truly professional force, remarked Khattak.

The CM, however, added the “filth of several decades” could not be cleared overnight.

The 19 buses were purchased in 2008 but could not be used due to deteriorating law and order in K-P and it was thus decided to hand them over to the government for use as transport vehicles for educational institutes.

Donor agency’s funding of KP uplift at risk

PESHAWAR: The United States Agency for International Development has cautioned the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government that delay in the ‘rationalisation and reorganisation’ of the Provincial Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Settlement Authority (PaRRSA) will reduce the possibility of the funding of development schemes in the province.

USAID upset by delay in PaRRSA reorganisation

Acting deputy mission director at USAID, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa/Fata John Crihfield recently informed provincial chief secretary Amjad Ali Khan through a formal letter that delay in the PaRRSA rationalisation and reorganisation would cause financial loss.“Failing to meet targets and numerous time extensions will cause the loss of $30 million in funds committed for the reconstruction of 100 flood-damaged schools, a tehsil level governance complex in Kabal area of Swat district, and health activities across Malakand Division.

The devastating floods had caused widespread damages in several districts of the province in July 2010 and damaged around 1,100 schools and other infrastructure, including roads and bridges. Millions of people were affected due to the calamity.

KP to launch interest-free loan scheme for skilled youth

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to launch an interest-free loan scheme for the skilled youth and seed money of Rs120 million has been allocated for this purpose.

This was announced by Minister for Information Shah Farman while briefing media persons about the decisions taken in the provincial cabinet meeting, which was chaired by Chief Minister Pervez Khattak here at the civil secretariat on Friday.

Mr Farman said that the government had established a youth challenge fund through which youth from 18 to 30 of age and having completed six-month diploma course in various skills would be eligible to get interest-free loan of up to Rs2 million.

Lady health workers to be regularised

Regarding transparency in disbursement of loans, Mr Farman said that a fair mechanism would be developed, while the scheme would be implemented by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda) and Bank of Khyber. He said the political interference would be discouraged so that the loans could be given to the deserving people on merit.
