Evidence of the moon having been split in two

Youve already answered this question in August 2009 but Id like to go into more detail. This website: http://www.mastikorner.com/forum/islamic-picx/6843-miracle-prophet-muhammad-p-b-u-h.html claims that Allah split the Moon in two at the request of the Prophet Mohammed and that there is a split on the Moon documented by American scientists that goes right around it which is evidence of the miracle. Is there any truth to any of these claims?

My recommendation is to not believe everything you read on the internet. Peer-reviewed papers are the only scientifically valid sources of information out there. No current scientific evidence reports that the Moon was split into two (or more) parts and then reassembled at any point in the past.

اللہ تعالٰی قیامت کے قرب کی اور دنیا کے خاتمہ کی اطلاع دیتا ہے جیسے اور آیت میں ہے آیت (اتی امر اللہ فلا تستعجلوہ ) اللہ کا امر آچکا اب تو اس کی طلب کی جلدی چھوڑ دو اور فرمایا آیت (اقترب للناس حسابھم ) الخ ، لوگوں کے حساب کے وقت ان کے سروں پرآ پہنچا اور وہ اب تک غفلت میں ہیں ۔ اس مضمون کی حدیثیں بھی بہت سی ہیں بزار میں ہے حضرت انس فرماتے ہیں سورج کے ڈوبنے کے وقت جبکہ وہ تھوڑا سا ہی باقی رہ گیا تھا رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اپنے اصحاب کو خطبہ دیا جس میں فرمایا اس ذات کی قسم جس کے ہاتھ میں مری جان ہے دنیا کے گذرے ہوئے حصے میں اور باقی ماندہ حصے میں وہی نسبت ہے جو اس دن کے گذرے ہوئے اور باقی بچے ہوئے حصے میں ہے ۔ اس حدیث کے راویوں میں حضرت خلف بن موسیٰ کو امام ابن حبان ثقہ راویوں میں گنتے تو ہیں لیکن فرماتے ہیں کبھی کبھی خطا بھی کر جاتے تھے ، دوسری روایت جو اس کی تقویت بلکہ تفسیر بھی کرتی ہے وہ مسند احمد میں حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر کی روایت سے ہے کہ عصر کے بعد جب کہ سورج بالکل غروب کے قریب ہو چکا تھا رسول کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا تمہاری عمریں گزشتہ لوگوں کی عمروں کے مقابلہ میں اتنی ہی ہیں جتنا یہ باقی کا دن گذرے ہوئے دن کے مقابلہ میں ہے ۔ مسند کی اور حدیث میں ہے حضور صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اپنی کلمہ کی اور درمیانی انگلی سے اشارہ کر کے فرمایا کہ میں اور قیامت اس طرح مبعوث کئے گئے ہیں اور روایت میں اتنی زیادتی ہے کہ قریب تھا وہ مجھ سے آگے بڑھ جائے ولید بن عبدالملک کے پاس جب حضرت ابوہریرہ پہنچے تو اس نے قیامت کے بارے میں حدیث کا سوال کیا جس پر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا میں نے حضور صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سنا ہے کہ تم اور قیامت قربت میں ان دونوں انگلیوں کی طرح ہو ۔ اس کی شہادت اس حدیث سے ہو سکتی ہے جس میں آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے مبارک ناموں میں سے ایک نام (حاشر) آیا ہے اور (حاشر) وہ ہے جس کے قدموں پر لوگوں کا حشر ہو حضرت بہز کی روایت سے مروی ہے کہ حضرت عتبہ بن غزوان نے اپنے خطبہ میں فرمایا اور کبھی کہتے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہمیں خطبہ سناتے ہوئے اللہ تعالٰی کی حمد و ثنا کے بعد فرمایا دنیا کے خاتمہ کا اعلان ہو چکا یہ پیٹھ پھیرے بھاگے جا رہی ہے اور جس طرح برتن کا کھانا کھا لیا جائے اور کناروں میں کچھ باقی لگا لپٹا رہ جائے اسی طرح دنیا کی عمر کا کل حصہ نکل چکا صرف برائے نام باقی رہ گیا ہے تم یہاں سے ایسے جہان کی طرف جانے والے ہو جسے فنا نہیں پس تم سے جو ہو سکے بھلائیاں اپنے ساتھ لے کر جاؤ سنو ہم سے ذکر کیا گیا ہے کہ جہنم کے کنارے سے ایک پتھر پھینکا جائے گا جو برابر ستر سال تک نیچے کی طرف جاتا رہے گا لیکن تلے تک نہ پہنچے گا اللہ کی قسم جہنم کا یہ گہرا گڑھا انسانوں سے پر ہونے والا ہے تم اس پر تعجب نہ کرو ہم نے یہ بھی ذکر سنا ہے کہ جنت کی چوکھٹ کی دو لکڑیوں کے درمیان چالیس سال کا راستہ ہے اور وہ بھی ایک دن اس حالت پر ہو گی کہ بھیڑ بھاڑ نظر آئے گی (مسلم ) ابو عبدالرحمن سلمی فرماتے ہیں کہ میں اپنے والد کے ہمراہ مدائن گیا اور بستی سے تین میل کے فاصلے پر ہم ٹھہرے ۔ جمعہ کے لئے میں بھی اپنے والد کے ہمراہ گیا حضرت حذیفہ خطیب تھے آپ نے اپنے خطبے میں فرمایا لگوں سنو اللہ تعالٰی کا فرمان ہے کہ قیامت قریب آگئی اور چاند دو ٹکرے ہو گیا ۔ بیشک قیامت قریب آچکی ہے بیشک چاند پھٹ گیا ہے بیشک دنیا جدائی کا الارم بجا چکی ہے آج کا دن کوشش اور تیاری کا ہے کل تو دوڑ بھاگ کر کے آگے بڑھ جانے کا دن ہو گا میں نے اپنے باپ سے دریافت کیا کہ کیا کل دوڑ ہو گی ؟ جس میں آگے نکلنا ہو گا ؟ میرے باپ نے مجھ سے فرمایا تم نادان ہو یہاں مراد نیک اعمال میں ایک دوسرے پر سبقت لے جانا ہے ۔ دوسرے جمعہ کو جب ہم آئے تو بھی حضرت حذیفہ کو اسی کے قریب فرماتے ہوئے سنا اس کے آخر میں یہ بھی فرمایا کہ غایت آگ ہے اور سابق وہ ہے جو جنت میں پہلے پہنچ گیا ۔ چاند کا دو ٹکڑے ہو جانا یہ آنحضرت صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے زمانہ کا ذکر ہے جیسے کہ متواتر احادیث میں صحت کے ساتھ مروی ہے ، حضرت ابن مسعود فرماتے ہیں کہ یہ پانچوں چیزیں ردم ، دھواں ، لزام ، بطشہ اور چاند کا پھٹنا یہ سب گذر چکا ہے اس بارے کی حدیثیں سنئے ۔ مسند احمد میں ہے کہ اہل مکہ نے نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے معجزہ طلب کیا جس پر دو مرتبہ چاند شق ہو گیا جس کا ذکر ان دونوں آیتوں میں ہے ۔ بخاری میں ہے کہ انہیں چاند کے دو ٹکڑے دکھا دئیے ایک حراء
کے اس طرف ایک اس طرف مسند میں ہے ایک ٹکڑا ایک پہاڑ پر دوسرا دوسرے پہاڑ پر ۔ اسے دیکھ کر بھی جن کی قسمت میں ایمان نہ تھا بول پڑے کہ محمد ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) نے ہماری آنکھوں پر جادو کر دیا ہے ۔ لیکن سمجھداروں نے کہا کہ اگر مان لیا جائے کہ ہم پر جادو کر دیا ہے تو تمام دنیا کے لوگوں پر تو نہیں کر سکتا اور روایت میں ہے کہ یہ واقعہ ہجرت سے پہلے کا ہے اور روایتیں بھی بہت سی ہیں ابن عباس سے یہ بھی مروی ہے کہ حضور صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے زمانہ میں چاند گرہن ہوا کافر کہنے لگے چاند پر جادو ہوا ہے اس پر یہ آیتیں مستمر تک اتریں ، ابن عمر فرماتے ہیں جب چاند پھٹا اور اس کے دو ٹکڑے ہوئے ایک پہاڑ کے پیچھے اور ایک آگے اس وقت حضور صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا اے اللہ تو گواہ رہ، مسلم اور ترمذی وغیرہ میں یہ حدیث موجود ہے ابن مسعود فرماتے ہیں سب لوگوں نے اسے بخوبی دیکھا اور آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا دیکھو یاد رکھنا اور گواہ رہنا آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم فرماتے ہیں اس وقت حضور صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اور ہم سب منیٰ میں تھے اور روایت میں ہے کہ مکہ میں تھے ابو داؤد طیالسی میں ہے کہ کفار نے یہ دیکھ کر کہا یہ ابن ابی کبشہ (یعنی رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) کا جادو ہے لیکن ان کے سمجھداروں نے کہا مان لو ہم پر جادو کیا ہے لیکن ساری دنیا پر تو نہیں کر سکتا ، اب جو لوگ سفر سے آئیں ان سے دریافت کرنا کہ کیا انہوں نے بھی اس رات کو چاند کو دو ٹکڑے دیکھا تھا چنانچہ وہ آئے ان سے پوچھا انہوں نے بھی تصدیق کی کہ ہاں فلاں شب ہم نے چاند کو دو ٹکڑے ہوتے دیکھا ہے کفار کے مجمع نے یہ طے کیا تھا کہ اگر باہر کے لوگ آکر یہی کہیں تو حضور صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی سچائی میں کوئی شک نہیں ، اب جو باہر سے آیا جب کبھی آیا جس طرف سے آیا ہر ایک نے اس کی شہادت دی کہ ہاں ہم نے اپنی آنکھوں سے دیکھا ہے اسی کا بیان اسی آیت میں ہے ۔ حضرت عبداللہ فرماتے ہیں پہاڑ چاند کے دو ٹکڑوں کے درمیان دکھائی دیتا تھا اور
روایت میں ہے کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے خصوصاً حضرت صدیق سے فرمایا کہ اے ابوبکر تم گواہ رہنا اور مشرکین نے اس زبردست معجزے کو بھی جادو کہہ کر ٹال دیا ، اسی کا ذکر اس آیت میں ہے کہ جب یہ دلیل حجت اور برہان دیکھتے ہیں سہل انکاری سے کہہ دیتے ہیں کہ یہ تو چلتا ہوا جادو ہے اور مانتے ہیں بلکہ حق کو جھٹلا کر احکام نبوی کے خلاف اپنی خواہشات نفسانی کے پیچھے پڑے رہتے ہیں اپنی جہالت اور کم عقلی سے باز نہیں آتے ۔ ہر امر مستقر ہے یعنی خیر خیر والوں کے ساتھ اور شر شر والوں کے ساتھ ۔ اور یہ بھی معنی ہیں کہ قیامت کے دن ہر امر واقع ہونے والا ہے اگلے لوگوں کے وہ واقعات جو دل کو ہلا دینے والے اور اپنے اندر کامل عبرت رکھنے والے ہیں ان کے پاس آچکے ہیں ان کی تکذیب کے سلسلہ میں ان پر جو بلائیں اتریں اور ان کے جو قصے ان تک پہنچے وہ سراسر عبرت و نصیحت کے خزانے ہیں اور وعظ و ہدایت سے پر ہیں ، اللہ تعالٰی جسے ہدایت کرے اور جسے گمراہ کرے اس میں بھی اس کی حکمت بالغہ موجود ہے ان پر شقاوت لکھی جا چکی ہے جن کے دلوں پر مہر لگ چکی ہے انہیں کوئی ہدایت پر نہیں لا سکتا جیسے فرمایا آیت (قل فللہ الحجۃ البالغۃ ) الخ ، اللہ تعالٰی کی دلیلیں ہر طرح کامل ہیں اگر وہ چاہتا تو تم سب کو ہدایت پر لا کھڑا کرتا اور جگہ ہے آیت (فما تغنی الایات والنذر عن قوم لا یومنون ) بے ایمانوں کو کسی معجزے نے اور کسی ڈرنے اور ڈر سنانے والے نے کوئی نفع نہ پہنچایا ۔

I would say that. At the time of the revelation of these verses. The people of mecca were not blind. They must have seen this miracle. Because if they didn't then there was no point in believing in the prophet anymore. Because if the verse say it was split but in reality it wasn't then the People of mecca had no reason to support or believe in the prophet. So It must have happened(saying logically for those who believe in logic and not faith).

The things you have read or heard are not mentioned in the Quran of Hadith.
But the incidents/miracles mentioned in the Quran / Hadith do not require "scientific" proof.

Babu_ji, you seem to have a penchant for internet 'truths'. There was no Adhaan in space and Neil Armstrong heard no such thing.

As for the splitting of the moon, I don't know what kind of information is there, but certainly scientific facts don't suggest that. What we should also remember is that science is a developing institution and therefore just because there is no proof today doesn't mean there will never be any proof. Perhaps, some day in the future science may find the empirical evidence for it. NASA themselves speak of "...no CURRENT evidence..." which excludes the possibility of an exhaustive study.

So, we may still find proof of such an occurrence somewhere in the future. Wallahu 'Alam.

If the moon split in two even for one second, it would have catastrophic effect on Earth's rotation. It's just like if tomorrow the Earth stopped spinning and came to a grinding halt, it would have similar catastrophic events. I personally think the moon never actually 'split', but appeared 'split'. Human perception is a remarkable thing. For example, when the moon is low on the horizon it will appear really large. However it is still the same distance as it has always been. The reason scientists say it appears that its larger is because when the moon is low on the horizon you have a frame of reference to compare the size, like with buildings or trees and therefore you say its large. When its high in the sky it appears small. Its an illusion you see clearly on a full moon evening. But its all in your head.

@Lurker, et al. The illusion of moon being seen as two parts sounds very logical. But the issue here is that logic, science and our senses have way less credibility than the word of Allah and the words of His Prophet s.a.w.w. and that is the first and biggest reason I would believe on the moon actually splitting in two parts and not just an illusion. It might have had major effects on the earth's rotation and orbit and season and tides and the moon's orbit around the earth too but nothing suggest that this did not happen and even the scientific effects did not occur. Illusion and trickery is the trait of magicians. Because of such impeccable credibility of Allah and His Prophet s.a.w.w. I believe that had it just looked so and not actually been split, it would have been told as so. Because of the extensive track history, I believe that if science can not explain something right now, it is not vast enough and hopefully in the future it will grow forth and be more logical at supporting the most credible history. The peer reviewed papers are simply not credible enough and I saw that being in the field of research.

It doesnt mean they become true or false! I remember Gohar Shahi (a fake prophet) claimed his face came on moon (also did peer Altaf Hussain). Those were the early days of photoshop.

I am seriously fed up of conspiracy theories. On one side fakers claim America didnt go to the moon, on other they say Neil Arm strong saw the line where the moon was split up! SERIOUSLY. GROW UP GUYS

Lets not jump on to conspiracy theories about lunar landings etc; we don't need to do that. Keep our thinking simple and straight. This authority that creates this universe, which is still way beyond our understanding, can make it happen too. May be not like just an isolated event but an environment which leads to that events through logic and laws; those that we don't even know yet.

To clarify a bit further, the question is NOT if the moon was split or not because it did and the most reliable source said so. The question is how much more will we take for our sciences and logics to grow enough so that they can explain the phenomenon and find any historical traces.

Unfortunately, it is the WEAK IMAAN of us that we have to "rely on NASA" etc. Once we read in Quran and Hadeeth, that should be it. Believe or get lost.

and Unfortunately, people with WEAK IMAAN either create or spread "false news" like NASA confirms Azaan on Moon (which is not true, neil armstrong didnt listen to any azaan. besides, there is no air on moon). But Will Islam become Less true because of it?

then some muslims claim "miracles" of Allah like name of Mohammad on clouds, bread, children etc etc (usually Photoshopped). Even christians and atheist have claimed such things.. It doesnt mean they become true or false! I remember Gohar Shahi (a fake prophet) claimed his face came on moon (also did peer Altaf Hussain). Those were the early days of photoshop.

Remember muslims, WE DO NOT NEED NASA to prove that there are benifits in sitting down and drinking water or namaz is good for health! We dont pray namaz to stay healthy! We pray it because ALLAH has ordered us to pray! Khatum Kahani

Oh and yes, this doesnt mean we should stop getting "ilm" or pursue science! Just remember, science is not perfect.

I differ from you, Haseeb, just a little bit at 'Believe or Get Lost'. Well I think Believe because the source is more credible and has never lied naozobillah. On the contrary, there's science which is all over the place! theories with no proof become basis for hundreds of years even in science. Many get cancelled or disproven so very low on credibility. Peer review system is horrible but thats the best it offers.
